Why BoxBoy! Is A Bucket List Game (Part 1)

BOXBOY! is a certified Bucket List game that everyone should play before he or she “kicks the bucket”.

The following information comes from Backlog and Bucket List Gaming ISSUE 2:

ALL ABOUT BOXBOY!:

I first saw Box Boy during one of Nintendo’s advertising videos, and I was immediately interested by the game’s simplistic graphics and premise. You are a box, completing puzzles, in a black and white world. Simple enough. Turns out, it was fun enough, too.

FUN WITH BOXBOY!:

The player controls the character Box Boy, a little square box, who is on a mission to save his planet and friends from certain darkness. No, I am not making this up.

There are no computer generated videos or voice acted monologues, yet the story is communicated through relatively short, understandable cut scenes every few stages.

BOXBOY! IS CHALLENGING FUN:

The game’s heart, however, is not its story but its gameplay—easy enough to comprehend but difficult to master . . .

The following information comes from Backlog and Bucket List Gaming ISSUE 2:

LIMBO SATISFIES:

Limbo is satisfying (no wonder it is on ten platforms and counting) in the way that it asks the player to find a solution to a problem and then after heartbreak, deaths by electrocution and drowning and impalement and other means, comes triumph in solving the problem.

It is a game that has spoken to many different gamers.

FUN FOR LIMBO:

For the gamers that want to pick up a game and play immediately, Limbo.

For those that are overwhelmed by all the buttons on the controller and wished a game only used a button or two, Limbo.

limbo-3-b

For players that want a story that is not told through an hour long cut scene, a game that can be beat in a handful of hours, a journey that tests your reflexes and puzzle solving abilities, well, that is going to be Limbo.

THE LIMBO BRILLIANCE:

It was the adventure, as well as the puzzles, along the way that kept me playing Limbo. For one, I really wanted to save my sister. The game’s simplicity is captivating. I needed to save my sister so I’m going to save her.

But then the puzzle aspect kicked in and my internal thought took over:

THE LIMBO THOUGHT PROCESS:

Oh, wait. There’s a crate.

What am I supposed to do with the crate? Let’s see. I can jump but do little else.

Can I push it? Cool. So, I guess I will push it into that lake. Crap! It is floating away. I need to jump on it quick.

limbo-2

Made it. I guess I will jump onto the land on the other side of the lake. Okay. What’s this? A sloped cliff.

Maybe I will climb it. Seems fine—oh no!

A boulder’s coming to get me. I died. The game reset and I am alive again. Good.

Now, how am I supposed to make it up that cliff without being squished?

LIMBO IS AN AWESOME ADVENTURE:

If you enjoy thinking like this for a good five hours or so, Limbo’s your game.

And it never stops asking the player to think or survey the environment, use tools that may seem like they are just part of the background, and solve tasks that seem simpler than they really are . . .

Why Limbo Is A Bucket List Game (Part 1)

LIMBO is a certified Bucket List game that everyone should play before he or she “kicks the bucket”.

The following information comes from Backlog and Bucket List Gaming ISSUE 2:

SAY HELLO TO LIMBO:

I would like to introduce you to a game I bought twice—a game that is on several platforms, making avoiding this gem a hard thing to do—and a game with no on-screen display: Limbo. The next game to be added to your Bucket List.

Limbo Title Screen

WHAT IS LIMBO?:

Limbo is an adventure puzzle game where the player gets to control a little boy who wakes up in a dark, dreary forest who soon realizes he needs to search for his sister. But finding his sister is no easy task.

The long forest takes you to many places: into caverns, up trees, across lakes, up ladders, and face to face with dangerous . . . things. I will keep that secret for when you eventually play the game. I recommend avoiding videos of this short and sweet adventure.

WHY I ENJOYED LIMBO:

I was hooked the moment I began my journey. The graphics were immediately striking with the world being consumed in darkness only brightened by the rays of white light coming from the background.

I remember waiting for the game to start only to realize it already had—the lack of on-screen health bars, inventory, and display really helped in immersing me into the game world. But it was the adventure, as well as the puzzles, along the way that kept me playing . . .

Why Pokemon GO Is A Bucket List Game (Part 3)

POKEMON GO is a certified Bucket List game that everyone should play before he or she “kicks the bucket”.

The following information comes from Issue 1 of Backlog and Bucket List Gaming:

THE POKEMON GO BRILLIANCE:

The idea of completing a collection of pocket sized animals, that are all around us, by using a device that most already have while doing things we have to do anyway (a long commute, train ride, etc.) is brilliant.

Why not make that hour-long trek to work fun by catching yet another Pidgey or that uncommon pocket monster? You might as well, because you’ll need as much Pokemon to transfer to the Professor in order to accumulate as many Pokemon candy as you can get.

3

THE POKEMON GO CRAZE:

If you are wondering what the craze is all about, wonder no more. People like Pokemon. For twenty years, kids who have since grown into adults have always wanted to catch Pokemon in the real world. It is exactly this contagious excitement that has spread from Pokemon fans to non-Pokemon fans and curious coworkers and family members alike.

1

WHY POKEMON GO IS A BUCKET LIST GAME:

The nature of the app has also helped this global phenomena to happen—Pokemon GO is free-to-play and to keep on playing, it is on both the Apple and Google stores, and a large number of mobile devices can run the game.

A fun free game with low barrier to entry that delivers an experience millions of people around the world have been waiting for? Pokemon GO didn’t have a chance of not being popular.

Why Pokemon GO Is A Bucket List Game (Part 2)

POKEMON GO is a certified Bucket List game that everyone should play before he or she “kicks the bucket”.

Read Part 1 of “Why Pokemon GO Is A Bucket List Game (Part 1)” by clicking here.

The following information comes from Issue 1 of Backlog and Bucket List Gaming:

POKEMON GO IS NEW:

I’ve taken walks that lasted for hours, along with my spouse, around a nearby marina nearly every night since the game has launched, simply to catch Pokemon, only to find groups of three or more people buzzing around doing the exact same thing.

It feels like everyone is sharing the same experience, a radically different feeling than when I’m playing—say—a game on Steam or new game that only those tuned into the gaming industry would care about.

4

POKEMON GO IS FUN:

I actually saw a girl pump her arm in the air in excitement from catching a Pokemon; a mother with her children perplexed at how many poke balls it took to catch a critter; a group of teens in a van stopped me to ask me what team I was on after battling at a Pokemon Gym, then the driver proceeded to compliment the Pidgey I left at the Pokemon Gym.

1

POKEMON GO IS LIKE HALLOWEEN:

With so many people on the streets, I have come to call this experience “Trick-Or-Treating for Grown Ups” . . . and kids, and parents, and for everyone. No one is left out even if not everyone is playing.

The closest I’ve felt to this experience is on Halloween, and I don’t want it to end. One day, it will for “all good things must end”. But for now, Pokemon GO is an unforgettable social experience that is easy to play . . . CONTINUE READING NEXT WEEK

Why Pokemon GO Is A Bucket List Game (Part 1)

POKEMON GO is a certified Bucket List game that everyone should play before he or she “kicks the bucket”.

The following information comes from Issue 1 of Backlog and Bucket List Gaming:

THE POKEMON GO EXPERIENCE:

Pokemon GO deserves to be on every gamers bucket list simply for the experience one gets by playing it.

It’s an experience the mobile app may not hold onto in the years to come when the player base normalizes, but at the game’s launch is a different story.

3

POKEMON GO IS SOCIAL:

What experience would that be? It’s hard to explain, but I’ll try my best. It is a social experience like no other and that’s not hyperbole. Before July, seeing someone with a phone meant that person was texting, checking Facebook, or using some other app independent of everyone else; a singular experience others were not privy.

After Pokemon GO, however, almost every person walking around with a phone in-hand is playing the game. And there are dozens upon dozens of players outside at almost all hours of the day . . . CONTINUE READING NEXT WEEK

Why Tomb Raider (2013) Is A Bucket List Game (Part 2)

TOMB RAIDER (2013) is a certified Bucket List game that everyone should play before he or she “kicks the bucket”.

Read Part 1 of “Why Tomb Raider (2013) Is A Bucket List Game” by clicking here.

The following information comes from Issue 1 of Backlog and Bucket List Gaming:

TOMB RAIDER IS APPROACHABLE:

I also would like to applaud Tomb Raider for its approachability. This game allows the player to play the game how he or she wants to.

As a result of this player freedom, I played most of the game as a stealth game, making moves without letting enemies see me until the last moment.

TOMB RAIDER ALLOWS YOU TO PLAY HOW YOU WANT:

You want to slink in the shadows and kill enemies from a distance? Play it as a stealth game. You want to run and gun and go attack head on? Play it as an action game. You want to do a little of both? That option is yours.

WHY TOMB RAIDER IS A BUCKET LIST GAME:

As far as the story is concerned, although the characters are not too memorable, Lara’s origin story is a convincing tale that made me care about the heroine’s plight

I felt responsible for getting her off of the wretched island she was marooned on and back to safety in one piece. And what a sweet, fun ride it was doing so.
Tomb Raider 2013 is a game every gamer must play before they kick the bucket.
